About a Boy (3:20)

The universal studies logo starts off the film. As the producer logos are coming up a voice over starts of the TV program 'Who Want To Be A Millionaire'. This starts as off screen sound but then as the picture comes up, you see that a man 'Hugh Grant' walks around his flat and the TV shows Chris Tarrent. The credits appear over the picture and they are in a very rounded relaxed font which makes you assume that the film is going to be a relaxing enjoyable film. They appear randomly over the screen and just fade in and out with again makes you think the film is going to be an easy feel good film to watch. The Titles are in white but when the actual title of the film appears it is in the centre screen and in black to make it stand out more. You don't see the characters head until the end of his monologue which creates enigma. the camera rarely stops moving which grabs the audiences attention as it makes them feel like they are moving with it. The non diagetic sound is a sound track and has a very happy tone. When the camera cuts to a boy laying in bed the happy music becomes slower and sounds more sad and the lighting is dark which makes you think this boy isn't very happy, again it creates enigma. the camera does not move as much which sets the tone that the emotions of this boy are slow and so are the camera. the music then fades and stops. This is so you can tell that the film is about to really start.

Things learnt from Preliminary Exercise.

After filming our preliminary excercise i now know how to use the camera, tripod and editing software (iMovie). Before this i new roughly how to work all of these things but now i feel as if i would be able to use them very easily. The tripod is very easy to use this will make things easier for when we come to film our real product we won't be wasting time trying to work out how to set it up. The camera again is very easy when you know how. As we are using school cameras and some of them are different it makes it a bit more confusing on how to use them but after doing this excercise i feel that i will be able to use them easily in the future. Finally we learnt how to use the editing software. At first this was very confusing with all the different buttons i didn't have a clue which ones to press to make it do what i wanted. But as i got the hang of it i realised that actually it is quite easy to use.

this is an example of a low and high angle shot. the high angle shot is where the camera is looking down on the object and a low angle shot is where the camera is looking up on the object in frame.

Secrets and Lies

Part 13

All the men in this look as if they belong to a business as they are all wearing suits. A couple of the men are smiling but the rest look as if they want to get it over and done with as quickly as possible.
You can hear the photographer and the sound of the camera but a apart from that there is no sound. The lighting is natural apart from the flash of the camera.
The representation of Britishness is that stereotypically men would not enjoy going to have there photos taken and this is obvious from their faces.
All the suits are dark coloured which could signify that they are professional business men or it cold signify that they are dull people.
The stereotypes are of British men not wanting their photo taken but it is not generally a bad thing and it is done to make it more realistic and so the audience could relate to them.

Secrets and Lies

Part 12
Mise-en-scene: The lady in the scene is wearing a corset and suspenders which shows that she is not ashamed of her body and wants to keep herself looking young. This also shows that she is of a high class as the dressing gown she is wearing is silk. Her hair is rather wild looking which could reflect her personality and her wanting to keep young looking. She is wearing quite a lot of make-up which is what you would expect from a middle aged woman, the colour of her eye shadow is dark which reflects the colour of her clothes, which could be a signifier of her personality. Her body language is confident as if she is not afraid to show her body. Throughout the clip her facial expressions also appear confident. It is if she is showing that she is not ashamed to be quite a big woman, which women of a bigger size may respect and look up to. In the background there is a pillar with some glowers, which also shows that she is upper class.
Sound and light: All the sound is diagetic which makes it seem more realistic. The lighting is quite dark but its natural lighting. When the picture is taken you can hear the camera sound and see the flash which clarifies that the picture has been taken.
Representation of Britishness: The only representation is that middle aged women are stereotyped to be vain, therefore take good care of their body and are not afraid to show off
Colour: She is wearing all black to look sexy and she is posing against a white table cloth so it makes her stand out.
Stereotype: The woman is a very stereotypical older lady who is trying to stay young and sexy.

Secrets and Lies

Part 11
Mise-en-scene: The young boy in the shot looks as if he doesn’t really know what’s going on so therefore doesn’t want to be there. The baby is sitting on a very old fashion chair which matches his jacket as they are both a rich red colour. The boy is wearing very smart clothing which stereotypes British families as most people like getting photo shoots done of there children dressed smart. The boys hair looks as though it has been brushed but been ruffled up probably by the boy. Another thing that shows the boy not wanting to be there is that he has his finger up his nose the mother tries to pull it out but it he immediately puts it back up there again. And again the boy is not even looking in the direction of the camera to show he doesn’t really understand what’s going on.
Sound and Light: the lighting is nothing special in this shot as no special effect have been put onto it. It has a front light to light up the child’s face and its probably coming slightly from the left as the boy is sitting on left and there is shadow on the chair on the right. You can again see the flash of the camera when the photographer takes the picture which as an audience you can see what the photo will look like. You can also here when the camera flashes. The only other thing you can hear is the mothers voice and the photographers voice. The mother is very stern telling her son to take his finger out of his nose.
Representation of Britishness: the main thing in the scene you can tell they are British is the fact that the mother has taken the boy to the shot rather then the father. This could be because the father either has work or is just not this interested in photographing there son. This also shows a stereotype that woman are normally the primary care givers to the children.
Colour: the colour of the boys jacket stands out and makes the boy dominant to the frame. This is also the colour of the chair he is sitting on which makes it stand out from the dull earthy coloured background. The boys top is a brighter red than the chair to make him stand out even more. You can tell from the colours he is wearing and his clothes that he is not from a poor background as he looks clean and healthy. He is all colour co-ordinated which makes him look more smart for the picture.
Stereotype: in this scene there are a few stereotypes but mainly the motherly figure. We can tell that the woman is his mother by the way she talks to the boy and also how she has brought him along to the shoot so is obviously responsible for him. We stereotype as woman bringing up children as in the olden days then men would work and the woman would stay home, although this is not the case now many people still believe this is the way a family should be. The boy is a typical young boy with his finger up his nose, boys are normally more dirty then girls and he doesn’t seem to care that what he is doing is wrong. Also, he is a stereotypical boy as he doesn’t seem very pleased about having his photo taken which a lot of girls this age would. Theses stereotypes have been used so people can relate to them and to make the scene more humorous.

Secrets and Lies

Part 10

The three girls are all dressed in the same clothes and in the same pose. They all look very cute and like a stereotypical little girls. The make up artist is wearing very neutral colours her hair tied back to it doesn’t get in the way. This makes her not standout as because she it part  of the staff it is not her job to. The mother is wearing a long floral dress and her hair all down and curly. This makes her look like a very stereotypical mum.
The lighting is the same but it has two spot lights across the back to make them look like little starts. The diagetic sound of the women talking represents Britishness a lot as women are known to be very open about there personal lives to strangers and this is shown when she is talking about fertility treatment.
The colour of the girls costumes are a baby blue which is very natural and pure to represent them. The makeup woman is wearing neutral colours to not draw attention to herself and the mum is wearing a very colourful floral dress as a stereotypical mum would.

Secrets and Lies

Part 9
These are three middle aged women still trying to look young
The clothes they’re wearing look as if they would of worn them when they were young
The sound is all diagetic and they laugh for a lot of it which shows they are happy and having fun
The lighting is natural and only changes when the flash of the camera is shown.
These are very stereotypical British friends as they seem very comfortable with each other and very close.

Secrets and Lies

Part 8

He is wearing a suit and a bow tie which would make him look quite high class but he also has a weird red hat and a huge moustache which as an audience makes you take him less seriously
All the sound is diagetic which makes it seem more realistic.
The lighting is quite dark but its natural lighting
When the picture is taken you can hear the camera sound and see the flash which clarifies that the picture has been taken
He is very dramatic and this is shown through his voice and his body language.
This is a stereotypical magician look.

Secrets and Lies

Part 7
The man does not look very happy that he is having the photo shoot, this becomes obvious ad he says that him mum is making him do it.
The lighting is all natural lighting apart from the flash of the camera.
The man is dressed in a suit so it shows that he is high class.
The representation of britishness is that a stereotypical man would not like to go and have a photo shoot and this is obvious but his facial expressions.

Secrets and Lies

Part 6
The woman in this you would stereotype as a cat lover. The signifiers that tell us is that she is wearing cats on her jumper and also that she is getting her cat a photo shoot.
The cat looks a bit bored as it sits there while the cats owner is very exited which also clarifies the stereotype of a cat lover.
The backdrop is darker in this to make the cat on its white chair stand out more.

Secrets and Lies

Part 5
The colour of the table cloth where the dog is on is the same colour as the woman's top.
The dog looks very looked after and you can tell this by the way the interrupts and make sure that you cant see the dogs collar .
Again the only sound is diagetic and you can hear the camera sound as it takes.
The lighting is natural and makes the dogs fur look very shiny which is good as makes the dog look very nice.

Secrets and Lies

Part 4
The lighting is very and bright and angelic to represent the new born child
The woman is very happy and her facial expressions show that
The woman looks very natural as she has just had a baby and looks quite tired
The sound is all diagetic as the only thing you can hear is the dialogue and then the sound of the camera

Secrets and Lies

Part 3

Mise-en-scene:
Her costume tells the audience that she’s a nurse
Her hair is tied back to show she is professional
She stands very straight which again show she is professional
She has no facial expressions right up and until he takes the photo and she smiles a little bit
Sound and Lighting:
All the sound is diagetic which makes it seem more realistic.
The lighting is quite dark but its natural lighting
When the picture is taken you can hear the camera sound and see the flash which clarifies that the picture has been taken
Representation of Britishness:
Stereotypically nurses are female so this show in the clip.
She is very serious about her job
Colour:
The blue is a stereotypical colour for a nurse to wear.
The background colour is dark to make her stand out

Secrets and Lies

Part 2
In the frame, the man is in classic boxing shorts and boxing gloves which shows that he is either a boxer or a fan of boxing. He has no hair. No make up is used as he is a man. He’s body language shows that he is guarding himself as if he is in a fight. He’s facial expressions show that he is prepared to fight against an opponent. This helps set the scene.
The sound he gives off is an aggressive arghhh which shows that he is preparing himself for the fight and to show that during a fight you would normally be angry. We can also hear the sound if the boxing gloves hitting each other. Also the photographer guiding the boxer how he is doing and what he should do next in the shoot. The lighting used is centre lighting which focuses on the subject to show us he is the person we should be focusing on. We can also see the flash of the camera.
There is not many representations of Britain, only the colours of red and white on his shorts which signify him being British. The frame stereotypes that boxers are aggressive by the aggressive facial expressions he gives off. Another stereotype could be that all boxers have big muscles. The stereotypes

Secrets and Lies

PART 1

The family are typical clothes for the kind of people they are. The dad is wearing a suit which you would associate with a working class man, the mum is wearing an old fashion long flowers dress, the nan is wearing big glasses and a big flowers blouse and the boy is wearing casual jeans and t-shirt. This makes the family look very conventional. Again the mum seems very happy about the photo shoot asking the photographer is they should say cheese, this make it obvious that she has organized it and the dad and the boy look like they really don’t want to be there and the nan looks quite happy.
